Brass Quintet No. 1 “Hochzeit” (Op. 5) was written by Schumann to be played at his wedding (Hochzeit translates to wedding in German). As well as functioning as Gebrauchsmusik (to be played at a wedding) this piece can also be played as a programmatic, 5-movement, concert piece. The first movement portrays the moments leading up to the wedding with themes representing love, excitement, and a nagging mother-in-law. The second movement is a regal and graceful march which accompanies the wedding party on their way to the altar. Movement three embodies the majesty and grace of the bride and is the proverbial center jewel in the crown. Movement four opens with a grand fanfare, moves to a triumphant march, and recapitulates with the love theme and sections of the second movement. The final movement expresses the joy that follows a wedding with the sound of bells. Brass Quintet No. 1 “Hochzeit” (Op. 5) is dedicated to his wife, Kate Schumann. |
