In the last three years Bryan Donald Schumann has received two commissions: one for concert band and one for orchestra. I have written a sonata for trumpet and piano, written and recorded a set of folk songs with the help of the Subito grant, written a short piece for solo piano, and transcribed that piece for brass quintet. In addition, He has had his works performed locally, nationally, and internationally.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- My Aesthetic Position: I share the same philosophy as the great Duke Ellington when he said, “If it sounds good, it is good”. When composing, I combine my strong roots in jazz, rock, and pop with my training in classical styles and forms. I like to use lyrical, often pentatonic melodies accompanied by dense jazz harmonies and pulsating rhythms. Some techniques I often use while composing are melody in canon, planing chords, Klangfarbenmelodie, and rhythmic modulation. I often keep a classical form in mind as a rough guideline, but allow for organic growth and development of the form when the material demands it. I am always trying to create something more interesting and exciting than before. My goal is to keep the audience on the edge of their seats and actually listening, not just hearing. ~Bryan Donald Schumann |
