Bryan Donald-DeVoe Schumann (June 11, 1985 - ) is an American composer, born and raised in the small town of Pine City, Minnesota. He received a B.A. Music degree from Augsburg College in 2007, where he studied music composition with Carol Barnett and Vladan Milenkovic and guitar performance with Dr. O. Nicholas Raths.
Since the age of 14, Schumann has collaborated in writing music and performed as a guitarist with several rock, pop, and folk bands. When composing concert music, he combines his strong roots in the rock and folk genres with his training in classical styles and forms. Schumann often uses visualization and imagery as inspiration for musical compositions. In his orchestral work, Bird Toy, the musical themes and formal sections where inspired by his cat Siegfried chasing a noise-making bird toy around his apartment. In the last three years Schumann has been commissioned to compose two new works: one for concert band and one for orchestra. His recent compositions include a collection of ten folk songs (written and recorded with the help from the American Composers Forum Subito Grant), a chamber work for the new music ensemble Zeitgeist, a three-movement work for classical guitar and double bass, a five-movement brass quintet, and several works for wind ensemble and orchestra. Schumann’s music has been performed locally, nationally, and internationally. Bryan Donald-DeVoe Schumann currently self-publishes his music under the Beznau Publishing title.
